Miniature Monuments To Everyday Trauma
In the Fall of 2020, I participated in Contain Your Fear, a group exhibition curated by Diane Bronstein. The exhibition explored the fears we all coped with in the shadow of the pandemic. My piece, Affliction, dealt with what I thought of as ‘in/out-a-phobia’–the fear of leaving the house during the pandemic lockdown while simultaneously fearing being trapped in the house. The exhibition ran in the Union Street Gallery in Chicago Heights, Illinois, and was on view this summer at Toe River Arts in Spruce Pine, North Carolina, June 18 to July 23, with other possible venues still to be determined.
In early 2022, I created As If Bare Hands Had My Heart Torn Apart for Be Mine, an exhibition that premiered on Valentine’s Day at the Greenleaf Art Center in Chicago, curated by Niki Nolin, Mike Benedetto and Pate Conaway. Created in the same manner as Affliction, I made a heart-shaped box, incorporated found elements, and added to the surfaces the surfaces a stone-like texture. I made a third sculpture, Tyranny of Desire (Homage to Marisol) in a baby-shaped box. Others are still in progress.
