Miriam Schaer is Artist in Residence at the Estonian Academy of Art in Tallinn!

March 25, 2011

I am so excited to be back in Tallinn! I was here in 1998, participating in the 11th Tallinn Print Triennial, in an exhibition called Reincarnation: Book.  It was great to be here again to see the 15th Print Triennial, which is up now at the new Kumu Art Museum. Liina Siib and Eve Kask invited me to come during my spring break from Columbia College Chicago to be an Visiting Artist at the Estonian Academy of Fine Art, to lecture and give workshops for the students. In addition to the image below, you can see more images of Tallin, the Academy and the workshops, in the album on my Facebook Page! I lectured on artist books, taught some book structures and alternative printmaking, like gum bichromate and cyannotype. You can also see images from the Nuku Muuseum (puppet museum)! It has been quite a marvelous experience!!!!

After my Wednesday evening lecture, students and others came and asked questions. Photo by Kristina Kruuse

In Time for Valentine’s Day: My Work On the Web!

I have been long fascinated by shaped bindings, and heart-shaped books have become a large part of my visual vocabulary. This February, I have work featured on three different websites:

Batter My Heart: A Wall Street Valentine (below) is featured, along with an interview on chicagopublishes.com

Books of the Heart at Baylor University Click on the tab at the top of the page: Your Favorite Love Songs. Curated from the collection, Your Favorite Love Songs is the first heart-shaped book I made.

Finally, Love and Madness (which incorporates everyone’s favorite Neitzche quote about love) is the featured book for Feburary on Vamp and Tramp Booksellers website.

Baby (Not) On Board: The Last Prejudice?

January 04, 2011

My newest work, Baby (Not) on Board:The Last Prejudice? addresses the question of why so many people are angered by women who choose childlessness. The work presented here is part of an ongoing exploration of our culture’s pejorative views about women without kids.  Gathered from interviews with childless women, online research, and personal experience, the comments are typical of an endless flow of critical statements that seem to be growing bolder, even as non-traditional families are gaining greater acceptance.
